#oops

in Adventures,i am random,life

I’ve somehow become a terribly unreliable blogger.  I know I said I wasn’t going to be blogging as much for the foreseeable future, but I didn’t mean to go so long between posts. So #oops #sorry #badblogger.

Work has been crazy busy, and if you follow me on Twitter, you know I’ve been to Vegas and now I’m on my way to Seattle for the Medical Library Association annual conference.

What else have I been doing? Well…

1. I planted my garden.

2. I saw Jersey Boys in Las Vegas and have listened to the soundtrack about 15 times.

3. I successfuly renegotiated one of my database contracts and got a lower price.

4. I sobbed like a baby during The Vampire Diaries season finale.

5. I discovered the best buttercream frosting ever (more on that later!)

What have you been doing lately?

Here, have a lolcat instead of a real picture

One Year Ago Today

by Elizabeth on April 27, 2012 · 1 comment

in life,tornadoes

One year ago today, my mom woke me up at 5 am telling me to get to my safe place – that a tornado was near my neighborhood.

One year ago today, I showered without power and prepared my safe place with all the necessary things.

One year ago today, I left work early in anticipation and fear of the worst tornado outbreak in my generation.

One year ago today, I watched this from the safety of my own living room:

 (Cullman, AL tornado)

And then this:

(Tuscaloosa, AL tornado. If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, pick it up at about 10:45.)

One year ago today, I realized that I had lived about 2 blocks from this:

FW: Pictures - Tuscaloosa

One year ago today, this tornado tore through my state, leaving a trail of destruction in it’s path.

Tornado Tracks

Pleasant Grove, Alabama

Hackleburg, Alabama

One year ago today, 252 precious Alabamians left this earth.

252 flags on Alabama's Capitol Lawn, one for each lost life

One year ago today, citizens of tiny communities and big cities alike stood in the rubble and vowed to rebuild.

We Are Alabama

For more on the tornado and its aftermath, you can read a portion of the Pulitzer Prize winning stories from The Tuscaloosa News, this recap video, James Spann’s, Alabama’s leading metorologist, thoughts one year later, and one of the many April 27th Flickr photo sets.

Menu Plan Monday and the Start of Another Water Week

April 23, 2012

Remember a few months back when I challenged myself to drink only one non-water beverage a day?  Yeah, I’m bringing that back.  I have pretty severe TMJ, which comes from being such high-strung person.  I wear a bite plate to sleep in, but I grind my front teeth so hard at night that after several [...]

It’s not a secret around here that I make almost all of my bread products.  Sandwich bread, the best dinner rolls ever, muffins, quick breads – you name it I make it.  And always with very good results. Want to know a secret? When it comes to biscuits, I’m a big, fat failure.  I feel [...]

Menu Plan Monday

April 16, 2012

How was your weekend?  Do anything fun?  I spent my weekend hanging out with friends and my family, and cleaning.  I feel like I clean my house all the time, but it never seems to be clean enough.  I turn around and there’s something else to clean.  I am perplexed at how one person and [...]

Weekly Wanderings #42

April 13, 2012

I haven’t published one of these in a while, so some of these articles are a bit older.  Just FYI. How to Write a Lovely Thank-You Note: Cate is definitely a letter writing champ, so you should trust her advice on writing thank you notes.  I was raised to write a note to everyone who [...]

Announcing Here for the Popcorn

April 12, 2012

If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that I’m a big fan of books and TV.  Well I’m also a big fan of movies, especially seeing movies in the theater with my friend Laura while eating lots of buttered popcorn.  We like to spend time after the movie (while [...]

Nancy Lee’s Lemon Meringue Pie

April 10, 2012

Nancy Lee is my grandmother.  No one calls her Nancy Lee except the family – double names are an old Southern tradition.  She was never what you would call a great cook, in fact, she stopped cooking anything for holidays except green bean casserole and chocolate chip cupcakes for as long as I can remember. [...]

Today I am…

March 30, 2012

…celebrating that it’s Friday.  This week has lasted forever, or so it seems. …excited because my dad and I head out to the race track for the Indy race.  This year we’re sitting in the VIP section. …contemplating what to wear to the race.  What sort of outfit will allow me to most effectively stalk [...]
